AP Music Theory

Course Description:

This course is designed for students seeking the rigor of a college level music course while still within the high school setting, completing the AP Music Theory exam.  The AP Music Theory course will enable students to learn the rules of music composition and develop listening skills through sight singing and dictation.  The AP Music Theory test has four parts: A multiple choice section, sight singing, dictation, and composition.  This course runs two semesters and, due to scheduling restrictions, AP Music Theory students may be placed in with the choir class.

Course Description:

This course is designed for students who have played a band instrument. Skills in tone production, intonation, technique, music reading, and musical expression will be studied within the concert band and march band repertoire. Students must demonstrate skills in precision, teamwork, musicianship and showmanship. Attendance at evening concerts, parades, football games, community events and rehearsals will be required as scheduled.

Course Description
What is this course all about?

Chorus is a course designed for students who wish to improve their singing skills, including sight reading, ear training, and vocal technique. A variety of musical styles will be performed, including popular and classical forms. Outside performances are required in this class.


How will this course help me be College and Career Ready? 

Students will become efficacious through consistent practice, learning to break goals (performing entire works) into manageable chunks (individual phrases and measures). They learn to be adaptable through seeking creative solutions for music that may need to be changed due to compositional errors, or differences in a performer’s skill or available rehearsal time.  Students will become worldly wise through the study of music from diverse time periods, styles, and cultures.  They will also have the opportunity to be influential through the consistent presentation of their work.

This course is designed as an experience in learning proper instrument playing techniques, proper use of the instrument and the reading and interpretation of both classical and modern music through practice, and performance on guitar.  The student should develop the ability to continue to the next higher level with the purpose of either playing for enjoyment or continuing in music as a profession.

Activities include concerts, contests, and small ensemble works. Attendance at evening concerts, community events, and rehearsals will be required as scheduled.

What is this course all about?

The three main components of the program are academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities helping scholars to pursue their goals and leverage their college and career readiness.  Scholars’ self-images improve and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.  Scholars will be exposed to various career and college opportunities through research and campus visits..
 

How will this course help me be College and Career Ready? 

AVID is a course designed to help support scholars in reaching their full potential. It is designed to prepare scholars in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility. The core component is the support scholars receive as they tackle the most rigorous classes.  AVID’s teaching strategies, curriculum, and training are used not only in the AVID elective class but by subject area teachers school-wide.
 

What concepts and skills will I master in this course?

In the theme of a 21st learning environment, analog and digital instruction will be integrated for learning, communication, and collaboration.  Through the use of Google classroom, students will be a part of an online community, learning positive ways to connect to others online and keep online friendships safe.  Students will develop an awareness of their Digital Footprint and Internet safety, learning how to navigate safely online.

Course Description:

What is this course all about?

Marina High School Associated Student Body (ASB), embodies all the clubs, arts organizations, activities, and athletic programs on our campus.  These clubs, teams, and organizations exist so that students may challenge themselves, reach toward their own strengths, promote community involvement on and off-campus, and be part of a diverse community of students. Marina High School wants students to be actively engaged and connected to their learning through involvement in school athletics, co-curricular, and extracurricular activities. In addition, involvement in school is a great way for students to make friends, learn teamwork, develop responsibility, and enhance college and scholarship applications.  For these reasons, we provide a wealth of opportunities for students to expand their horizons.

How can I be successful in this course?

Success in this course is dependent on your willingness to meaningfully engage with events and activities both inside and outside the classroom. All tasks should be viewed as a team effort, making effective communication vital to a successful event. Scholars will have to collaborate with their grade level, committees, different clubs, and the general school population. As members of ASB, all scholars are expected to model the school culture if they wish to continue in this course.

Course Description:
What is this course all about?

Student Leaders of Change is a dynamic student-centered course that provides students opportunities to blend leadership skills with advocacy to address local issues concerning race, gender, and class. A lens of social justice will pervade the course as students will participate in this liberatory class in which students have multiple types of leadership opportunities with the teacher serving as a guide and advocate. Each unit will be project-based in that content will be learned through inquiry with students able to research content individually and/or collaboratively. The class centers on using knowledge about power, systems, and structures of race, gender, and class to address local issues, including participation in school awareness campaigns, working with teachers on curricula, and participating in community organizations.

 

How will this course help me be College and Career Ready? 

This course will support scholars in being leaders in their community and will connect them to community organizations as well as support them in any college or career that they choose.

 

What concepts and skills will I master in this course?

In this course, we will mostly focus on socratic seminars and project based learning.  The scholars will learn to debate ideas, mediate conflicts, and become community leaders.

What is this course all about?

Students will plan and produce the school’s yearbook The Navigator. We are the historians of the campus and strive to tell the story of the year through photography, articles, quotes. We strive to represent the students of Marina High in a manner that is fair, inclusive, and respectful. Each student will apply for and need to maintain a specific job by completing tasks. Yearbook requires a considerable amount of work outside of class.


How will this course help me be College and Career Ready? 

Students will be given challenging real world projects and assignments typical of the graphic design, and publishing industries.


What concepts and skills will I master in this course?

In this course students will gain skills in page design, advanced publishing techniques, copywriting, editing, and photography while producing a creative, innovative yearbook which records school memories and events. There is an emphasis on journalism skills in this class. Participants gain useful, real world skills in time management, marketing, teamwork, and design principles.

Course Description:
What is this course all about?

The purpose of the course is to provide Dual Enrollment students a structured Collaborative Study Group environment. In Collaborative Study Groups (CSGs), students identify a specific question from a content area, collaborate to develop and deepen their understanding through Socratic inquiry, and apply their new learning in order to enhance classroom performance.  In addition to the academic benefits, successful CSGs also serve as an independent demonstration of increasing mastery and application of skills built and reinforced through WICOR strategies. These skills include inquiry, note-taking, organization, collaboration, communication, and numerous other skills necessary for college readiness.

Is about studying the human brain to understand the mechanisms that cause us to act in specific ways when we are in social situations.


How will this course help me be College and Career Ready? 

This course will help you to be aware of why you react to specific situations in the ways that you do and will gain some tools to help you overcome issues you may have in social situations.


What concepts and skills will I master in this course?

We will look at the parts of the brain and what they control within the body. From there we will learn about the different aspects of social interaction and how they affect our bodies. Finally you will be able to confront social situations with the knowledge you need to overcome most obstacles.
